Farewell to a grand lady

Redmond said farewell to one of its most esteemed citizen this week, when several hundred people attended a memorial for Becky Johnson at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center. Johnson, like her husband, former Redmond mayor Sam Johnson, was known for her intelligence, community involvement, and caring personality.

The city of Redmond is working on designs for a small overlook park on the east side of the new Maple Street Bridge. The overlook will also provide another access point to the bottom of the canyon for recreationists.

Redmond High School boys won their own invitational meet last weekend, beating longtime swim rivals Summit by 13 points. Relay swimmer Joseph DeLeone made up two places in the 400-meter race, entering the pool in third place and exiting a winner.

More than $100,000 in loans is being considered for owners of two downtown buildings. The city's new facade grant/loan program is hoped to improve the overall look of the city center. The city council will consider the loans at its Jan. 23 meeting.
