Cecil R. Campbell
June 1, 1912 - March 27, 2009
A legendary friend, bowler, fisherman and buckaroo has just ridden off into his final sunset. Born on June 1, 1912 in Philomath, Oregon, Cecil Campbell grew up on a 4,000 acre ranch near Corvallis, Oregon. The son of Jesse W. Campbell and LaVina (Bowers) Campbell he had 12 brothers and sisters. Leaving Corvallis in his teens, he worked on several ranches in Eastern Oregon as a buckaroo and mule team driver. He returned to the Willamette Valley where he met and married Pearl Bevel in 1936. Together they then returned to Central Oregon where Cecil worked in logging near Sisters, Oregon. In 1946 Cecil and Pearl moved to the Glen Ranch located between Post and Paulina, Oregon. While there, Cecil ran cattle for Robert Lister and Gill Cattle Company. He was one of the first members of the Paulina Rodeo Club, participating in building the rodeo grounds and putting on the Paulina Jackpot Rodeo.
Cecil was honored as Paulina Rodeo's "Old Timer" in 1981. After living in the Paulina area for 10 years followed by some farming in Powell Butte, Cecil then went to work for Barclay Logging Company in Sisters, Oregon until he retired in 1976.
Cecil and Pearl had three children, Frank (Susie) Campbell of Wenatchee, Washington, Dee Dee Elliott of Redmond, Oregon, and Faye (Roger) Gullixson of Portland, Oregon. Pearl preceded him in death in 1976.
At the age of 51 Cecil discovered the sport of bowling. He is a local celebrity in the bowling community and he has bowled in many leagues and tournaments. In 1988, he won the second annual Budweiser PBA Northwest Regional Open Pro-Am championship tournament. For many years Cecil bowled in pro-bowler Dave Husted's Milwaukie Bowl Pro-Am, at which he always rolled a game with Dave, even last year at the age of 96!! Throughout his bowling career, he coached and helped many bowlers including the Campbell's All Stars, a team that he both sponsored and bowled with for many years.
For the last 27 years, Cecil resided in Terrebonne, Oregon, making countless friends who have been the lucky recipients of his many wonderful stories. On many a morning before a fishing trip, Cecil's favorite place to spin these stories to the locals was Terrebonne's Sun Spot Drive-In where his stories will always live on.
Cecil is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by brothers, Bobby Campbell, Earl Campbell, Jesse Campbell, and sister, Betty Koon. He was preceded in death by his close companion, Helen Livingston in 2007.
A celebration of his life will be held on April 19th at 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 1836 SW Veterans Way, Redmond, Oregon.
