David Clayton McCrea
January 3, 1938 - April 3, 2011
David Clayton McCrea, a gentlemen who thoroughly enjoyed his time on the Hood River
catching steelhead.
David was born to Clell C. and Edna M. McCrea on January 3, 1938, in Redmond, Oregon. David was known for his athletics while attending schools in Redmond. Most notable was his instrumental contribution in breaking a 30-year old record with a win over Bend High in 1954, as quarterback. During high school he met the love of his life, Alberta I. Casteel. Following their courtship, David and Alberta were married June 20, 1959. They soon began to build their family with five grateful children.
Missing him deeply is his wife Alberta of Hood River, his three daughters Sherri, Carrie and Lorri of Central Oregon; and his two sons David and Clayton of Hood River. David is also survived by his brother Donald of Portland, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In 1984, David was able to fulfill his true dreams by becoming a full-time fisherman. Upon the family relocating to Hood River, David was able to retire at the young age of 45 from a long career with Whittier Molding as a supervisor. When not spending time on the river, David was with his family, who he adored.
Trips home to Central Oregon and the Oregon Beach were his favorite times with family. His last beach trip was spent with the entire family celebrating his 50 years of marriage to Alberta. In recent years those close to him saw his gentleness blossom when he was in the company of his favorite companion and man’s best friend, Ni-Sha. David maintained his active lifestyle, enjoying the outdoors until recently, when his heart was no longer able to provide him the necessary energy to pursue his true passion. On April 3, 2011, at Portland Providence Medical Center a wonderful husband and cherished father found ultimate peace surrounded by his wife and five children.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm April 8, 2011, in Hood River at Anderson’s Funeral Home with a light reception to follow. Graveside services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday April 9, 2011, in Redmond at Redmond Memorial Cemetery, with a reception following at Mountain View fellowship in Redmond. The family suggest donations be made in his name to the Hood River Senior Center in lieu of flowers.
