Charles Hastings Ward
March 11, 1919 - Feb. 28, 2012
Charles Hastings Ward passed away Feb 28, 2012. He was born March 11, 1919, in Empress, Alberta, Canada, to Charles Q. and Alta Merle Ward. He and his family homesteaded land on the eastern Alberta plains in the early 1900s.
In 1924, the family moved to Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho, where Chuck completed high school. After graduation in 1937, he attended North Idaho Teacher’s College for 2 years. He then returned to Bonner’s Ferry where he taught 5-8th grades until he was drafted into WWII.
Called to service in the US Army/Air Corp in 1943, Chuck became an instructor in maintenance of radio equipment on military aircraft. When the war ended he attended Eastern Washington College of Education, in Cheney, Wash., and received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education. During that time, Chuck met and married Jane Irene McKinley in 1947. He then taught in Colfax, Wash., for 2 years. The following year, he obtained a teaching position in Redmond, Ore., and taught there for the next 32 years. He taught industrial arts at Redmond Union High School. During those years he also received his masters degree in education from Oregon State University.
Chuck and Irene raised three children, who along with their families survive him: Glenda (Jim) Miller, Cindi (Don) Dunn, and Daniel (Kathleen) Ward. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, along with their spouses, and six great- grandchildren. Irene McKinley passed from this life in 1975.
In 1981, Chuck married Pauline “Pauly” Callahan. The couple spent many years traveling and square dancing together. Pauly passed away in 1988.
In 1989, Chuck married Ruth Evelyn Kinsman. Together they spent 22 years traveling and enjoying many interests including volunteer work with the Redmond Senior Center, and the Oregon Retired Teachers Association. Ruth passed away earlier this year.
In September 2009, it was revealed to Chuck that he had colon and liver cancer. Our family has been grateful for the two-plus years we have enjoyed together since the diagnosis was made and especially want to thank Dr. Cora Calomeni and her staff at Cancer Center of the Cascades for their wonderful care of Dad during this time.
Dad’s wish was to “celebrate” his life while he was still living, so a service was held on Feb. 6 of this year, at the Stone Lodge Retirement Center. He was so grateful to all who attended and shared this special occasion with him. According to his wishes, no further services will be held.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice House of Bend. We are blessed as a community to have a facility, as well as a staff of such caliber, near to us.
