Come on downtown

Since the invention of the suburbs, multiplexes and big box chain stores, traditional downtown districts have been fighting for recognition, and Redmond -- young as it is -- has proved no different.

For the past several years a group of downtown business owners and supporters have been meeting to brainstorm ideas designed to entice the community to the city's core.

"When I opened the store (in 2007) I did a lot of organizational work on group marketing concepts," says Brad Smith, co-owner of Paulina Springs book store. "I got estimates and went to fellow merchants to see who wanted to join me and I think I was only successful once. It was like pulling teeth back then. But I feel like now there are more people willing to consider working together. Maybe we've turned a corner and realize the need to cooperate."
