Robert ‘Bob’ Arthur Erbes, 88, of Redmond, Oregon, died at St. Charles Hospital in Redmond on July 8, 2014, from pneumonia. He was born to Robert & May (Sprick) Erbes on February 24, 1926 in Portland, Ore. Bob attended Multnomah School and worked various jobs before finding his calling as a gifted auto mechanic. Along the way, he helped build a midget race car, served on the crew for the car, and was a member of both the Western Auto Racing Assoc. & the Roadster Racing Assoc. of Ore. His interest in racing continued throughout his life as he attended many NW Oldtimers picnics and spent many afternoons watching NASCAR races with his children and grandchildren.
In 1952, Bob married Phyllis Allene Churchman, daughter of Harold & Elsie Churchman. They settled in Portland where their first two children were born. Desiring a more rural lifestyle for his family, he relocated them to Redmond where their third child was born in 1964.
In 1965, he became a volunteer for the Redmond Fire Dept. where he faithfully served his community for 24 years.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling and attending the “Multnomah Gang” get-togethers as well as multiple trips around the U.S. to visit his Navy sons wherever they were stationed. He also became a member of the local Moose lodge and worked several summers helping the Forest Service with fire equipment.
Bob’s survivors include his daughter, Patty, of Milwaukie, Ore.; sons, Rob of Redmond and David (Shelley) of Poulsbo, Wash.; sister, Betty (Gene) Olson of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; brother, Art of Cypress, Calif.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson; multiple nephews, nieces and extended family and many lifetime friends.
