The City of Redmond is moving forward on the Evergreen Rehabilitation Project, which is planned to start next month. The Evergreen Elementary building is to become the new city hall, with a project contractual end date of October 2016. Read more about the project and how to get involved in this week's paper.
Redmond's Austin Doescher pins Jared Wheeler of Crook County Jan. 21. Doescher's win was one of four victories by Redmond. Crook County won the match 51-18. The Panthers host Bend Thursday and then look ahead to the regional wrestling tournament in Hood River Feb. 13-14.

Jessie Marie Lynam Petersen was born to Edith and Jess Lynam, September 25, 1918 on her grandparents’ homestead at Opal Springs, near Culver, OR. Marie died on January 15, 2015 of natural causes, with her family at her side, at Powell’s Care Home, where she had lived for the past four months.
Marie married Loyd (“Bud”) Petersen of the Pleasant Ridge Community on October 3, 1938. Four children were born to this union. She and Bud owned and operated the Pleasant Ridge Dairy for many years.
Marie graduated from Redmond Union High School in 1937 and lived most of her life in the Pleasant Ridge community. She and Bud sold their 40 acre farm in 1990 and moved to Redmond.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, and Redmond Grange.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; her parents; sisters, Darlene Anderson and Lela Suter Warren; brother, Joe Lynam; and a baby girl.
She is survived by daughters, Lois (Ed) Frey of Redmond, Margit (Bill) Eskew of Redmond, Edith (Norm) Maley of Powell Butte and son, Ed (Kay) Petersen of Madras; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her family wants to thank the nurses and doctor in the ICU at St. Charles Redmond, Hospice of Redmond, and the family at Powell’s Care Home for their loving kindness and special care.
Services for Marie have already been held. Memorial contributions are appreciated to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund, or to Hospice of Redmond.
Deschutes Memorial Chapel is entrusted with Marie’s arrangements.
Volunteers sort thrift items at the Brightside Animal Center Thrift Store for the Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service, Jan. 19. Volunteers came from a variety of places including, Target, Summit High School, and the Bend Kiwanis, and helped sort items in the warehouse.
Tanner O'Neal goes to the hoop against a crowd of Mountain View defenders. O'Neal scored six points in the game. Mountain View won the IMC contest to go 2-0, while the Ravens fell to 2-1 in League play. Ridgeview is 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Intermountain Conference play. The Ravens host Bend Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

Volunteers key to Redmond economic success Volunteer Site Director Maureen Davis marshaled a few hundred volunteers to another successful completion of the Oregon Wrestling Classic. Huffer to Hall of Fame Crooked River Ranch golf pro Pat Huffer has served the golfing community since the mid 1970's and guided the CRR golf course since 2006, keeping the Ranch course above water through hard times. Huffer will be inducted into the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Hall of Fame this April. See Sports, Page 3.

The problems of the working poor and homeless haven’t diminished with the economic turnaround. Redmond social service organizations are still experiencing a high demand for food and other services. This weekend 3,000 wrestlers will return to the High Desert for the 12th year running at the Oregon Wrestling Classic. Local high school wrestling teams will be among the 84 teams competing for state dual meet championships in five classifications. The meet will also host 1,000 kid wrestlers and the first ever girls dual meet between two Oregon High Schools. Look to page 3 in this week’s Spokesman.
Redmond Chamber of Commerce will host their annual banquet and business awards at Eagle Crest this year, with a predicted 250 attendees.
