A man who fell to his death April 10 at Smith Rock State Park has been identified as 20-year-old Alexander J. Reed, of Bend, according to a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office news release.
A 9-1-1 call reporting that a climber fell in the area of Misery Ridge at the Terrebonne park came in at 7:50 a.m. April 10, officials said. Deputies and emergency workers determined Reed was dead when they found him, officials said. Witnesses told officers that Reed went up the Misery Ridge Trail alone, and they heard a yell and saw a man fall from the top of the trail, officials said.
The 200-foot fall appears to be accidental, officials said.
Reed was not actively climbing at the time of the fall but had climbing rope, a harness and other climbing gear, officials said.
Because of the difficult terrain, 12 of the sheriff’s office’s search and rescue volunteers responded to help remove Reed, while park rangers and volunteers and Redmond Fire representatives also helped.
