A 73-year-old Prineville resident was killed in a head-on collision Dec. 5 on S. Highway 97 near the Airport Way interchange in Redmond, according to an Oregon State Police news release.

Richard James Lanning drove a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu across the center lines while driving north on Highway 97 and collided head-on with a Bend Roof Truss truck, which was being driven southbound by Kavan Rose, 48, of Bend, according to a preliminary investigation, police said. The reason why Lanning crossed the center line is not known, police said.

Lanning was pronounced dead at the scene, while Rose was taken to St. Charles Redmond with injuries not considered life threatening, police said.

The stretch of Highway 97 was closed for approximately 3 1⁄2 hours after the crash, police said. Redmond and Bend police, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond Fire and Rescue and the state Department of Transportation assisted with the response.
