The death of a man found Jan. 31 at Smith Rock State Park has been ruled a suicide, according to a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Hikers at the park reported finding the 21-year-old, who had apparently fallen from a higher elevation near Monkey Face, at 2:31 p.m., officials said. Two sheriff’s deputies, Redmond Fire personnel and state park personnel and Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit Volunteers, including a volunteer who happened to be hiking in the park, quickly responded and confirmed the man’s death, officials said.

Investigators determined the man, whose name is being withheld, took his own life and no one else was involved, officials said.

The death was the ninth at Smith Rock since 2002, according to The Bulletin. The most recent previous death was in April 2018, when climber Alex Reed fell about 300 feet and died as he prepared ropes.
