Garage Fitness, 720 NW Redwood Ave.

A popular gym has moved from downtown Redmond to the north end of town.

The move — to a building that Garage Fitness owner Matt Richardson and his wife Michelle bought — expanded their gym space to 3,800 square feet from 990. The building at NW Redwood Avenue and NW Seventh Street comes with enough property that Richardson also hopes to set up an outdoor fitness area for the summer.

Richardson said his goal in expanding the gym is to be able to provide more people with a personalized plan for what he calls “functional fitness” than he was able to accommodate at the gym downtown.

He designs all of the programs at the gym, which offers group classes and private training for individuals who want or need intensive personal training.

“Our classes are small group personal training,” Richardson said. “We keep them small. If we get over 10 people then we divide them into two classes. That’s why we needed more space than we had downtown.”

Richardson plans to eventually have an open gym area for members in the group classes who have a target zone they want to work on.

A common problem he’s seen at gyms over the years is that people come in and need personalized help, but don’t get that help unless they pay for a personal trainer in addition to the gym membership.

“That’s why gyms often require a one or two year contract — because they know people are going to come in and then not use them,” he said.

Richardson offers a $129 monthly rate without a contract and works with each member to design a fitness plan for their individual needs. He also offers a family rate.

In this new space, Richardson will also be contracting with a professional mixed martial arts fighter to offer small group Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes.

The Redmond Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting at Garage Fitness at 4:30 p.m. March 6.
