A Thursday morning collision on Highway 97 took the life of 19-year-old Sara Edwards, of Redmond, according to an Oregon State Police news release.

Preliminary investigation shows Edwards was driving south around 6:46 a.m. when she tried to avoid a vehicle entering the highway from the Desert Terrace Mobile Estates, located across Highway 97 from Juniper Golf Course south of Redmond, police said. Edwards lost control of the Honda Pilot she was driving and slid into the northbound lanes, where she collided with a Mack concrete pumping truck, driven by Michael Cucura IV, 36, also of Redmond, police said.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cucura sustained minor injuries.

The state police were assisted by the Redmond and Bend police and fire departments, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the state department of transportation, police said.

Anyone who saw the crash or has information is asked to call 800-442-0776.

Correction: Because of incorrect information provided to the Spokesman, the name of Micheal Cucura was spelled wrong in an earlier version of this story. The Spokesman regrets the error.
