Redmond Police are planning enhanced districted driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants enforcement in April, according to a pair of news releases from the department.

The department already used focused enforcement for distracted driving in March, using three officers funded by grants, police said. In 12 hours of enforcement, nine citations were issued for unlawful use of an electronic mobile device, and five more drivers received warnings, police said. The patrols also led to several other citations, including for speeding and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Though the department didn’t use enhanced DUII enforcement in March, police said they arrested 12 drivers suspected of the crime, which can include drivers intoxicated by alcohol or other substances that are legal or illegal.

“The primary intent of these heighten patrols is to prevent deaths, injuries and property damage caused by DUII drivers by removing them from the road,” police said in the release.

The April 3 announcement of the heightened DUII patrols comes a day after Bend Police got in a chase with a California woman suspected of DUII on Highway 97, heading toward Redmond, according to a Bend Police news release.

Larklyn Smith Blunck, 66, was seen swerving around 5:30 a.m. April 2 on Highway 97 near Empire Avenue in Bend, and continued to swerve when officers saw the car near the Cooley Road intersection, police said. Blunck allegedly did not stop when asked and a chase resulted, not exceeding 60 mph, police said. After allegedly driving over spike strips, Blunck continued driving but was stopped near the intersection of Highway 97 and SW Quarry Avenue, just south of Redmond, police said.

Blunck was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, attempting to elude police, reckless endangering and reckless driving and taken to the Deschutes County jail, police said.

Drivers are asked to report suspected DUII driving by calling 541-693-6911 in Deschutes County or 800-24-DRUNK anywhere in Oregon.
