Betty was born in Camden, Missouri to parents Clell and Aletha Millsap on March 1, 1927. She was a war bride who met her husband Everett (Bud) Van Matre at a dance and was married on December 18, 1943. They were married almost 68 years.
After the war, they returned to Bud’s home town of Redmond, Oregon where they lived and raised their family. They had two sons, Dennis (Jan) and Wayne (Geri), 8 grandchildren, Wendy, Jackie, Cindy, Wade, Toni, Carrie, Kelly, Shane, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Betty worked in downtown Redmond at the Trailways Cafe, Cent Wise Drug Store, Hector’s, McGowan Shoe Store, Hogan’s and Hatfield’s. The last ten years before her retirement was spent as the office manager for Van Matre Oil Company.
She was an avid golfer and enjoyed many years of traveling around the northwest with Bud playing in couples golf tournaments. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and board games with friends and family. She also volunteered at the hospital as a member of the hospital auxiliary.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister and her husband who passed in 2011.
A family memorial will be held at a later date. A private internment was held at the Redmond Memorial Cemetery.
