Two Redmond Proficiency Academy skiers will take part in national competition this week.
Sarah Kilroy and Katie Costello will take part in the U.S. Junior Nationals Saturday through March 17 at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska, according to a release from the charter school.
They were part of RPA’s team that recently finished second at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association Nordic state championships.
RPA’s performance in the Feb. 22-23 event at Mt. Bachelor was highlighted by a victory in the relay race.
The team of Jessica Whitticar, Costello and Kilroy finished with a time of 8 minutes, 30 seconds, which was five seconds ahead of second-place Summit.
“Before the relay Katie, Jessica and I were discussing the possibility of taking second in the relay, though we knew we would have to put up a real fight,” Kilroy said in the statement. “Coming in first gave us a lot of hope that our overall score would be in contention with Summit and Bend, and to come out in the middle of the overall stacked score was very exciting and rewarding.”
Summit, with 45 points, edged out RPA’s 47 points for the girls team title. Bend High was third with 48 points.
Individually, Kilroy finished second in combined to Bend’s Ann McColgan, while Costello was fifth. Kilroy’s individual performances included first in the six-kilometer skate race and second in the 4-K classic race, switching places with McColgan.
Other RPA team members included Marleigh Dunning, Sonia Gonzalez Casarrubios, Josie Graydon, Auna Pendergrass, Sydney Scott, Kate West and Jane Whitticar, according to the news release.
