Boys cross country
Redmond sophomore Finn Anspach finished 55th of 95 runners at the Class 5A state championships in Eugene. Anspach finished with a time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds. Evan Holland of state champion Ashland won with a time of 14:30.4.
Girls cross country
Redmond sophomore Kloey Frederick finished 12th of 90 runners at the Class 5A state championships in Eugene, with a time of 18 minutes, 58.7 seconds. Sophomore Madeline Nason of state champion Corvallis won with a time of 17:51.6.
Redmond falls at West Albany in playoff opener: Redmond found some early momentum, but the Panthers ultimately fell to No. 3 West Albany 56-13 Friday night in the first round of the OSAA Class 5A football playoffs at West Albany High School. The undefeated Bulldogs (10-0), the No. 1 team from Special District 3, advance to take on No. 6 Ashland in the quarterfinals next week. No. 14 Redmond, the second-place team from Special District 2-North, finished the season with a record of 6-4. “We played really tough,” said Seth Womack, the Panthers first-year coach. “We just weren’t able to stop them. They were able to score pretty easily at times. They’re pretty good, for sure. We made some mistakes in some situations, and we couldn’t climb out from that.” Linebacker Colt Folston led the Redmond defense with nine tackles. —The Bulletin
Former Redmond runner earns academic honors: Former Redmond High runner Treyson Conley, now with Northwest Nazarene University, earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team honors. The sophomore has a 3.66 grade-point average. Conley also finished 87th Nov. 9 at the NCAA Division II West Regional Cross Country Championships hosted by Western Oregon, with a time of 31 minutes, 5.8 seconds on the 10,000-meter course.
Smith Rock free day: A free guided hike will be offered at 10 a.m. Jan. 1 at Smith Rock State Park. The event is part of the First Day Hikes being offered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and America’s State Parks, with the $5 entry fee also waived. The moderate four-mile hike on the River Trail is limited to 35 participants. It is recommended for hikers at least 7 years old. Dogs and baby strollers are not allowed.
